A comprehensive look at the Ukrainians today and throughout history, both in the Ukraine during the war and in the U.S. for those who emigrated there.
It features a series of chapters that were articles on Substack about the Ukraine throughout history and today, which I was especially drawn to write about because my grandparents on my father’s side came from the Ukraine and nearby countries, Romania and Bulgaria, and I made three trips to the country about 40 years ago during the Glasnost years under Mikhail Gorbachev when Ukraine was still part of the Soviet Union.
The book covers these main topics: traveling to the Ukraine at a time of peace; a history of Ukraine’s resistance in the war, fueled by its drone revolution; and the country’s 20,000 year history from Ice Age hunters to Russia’s century-long war against the Ukrainian people.
The book also includes chapters on the role of women in the war, and everyday life for Ukrainians in wartime Ukraine and in the U.S.
It additionally includes chapters on the role of the churches and religious communities and artists, writers, and musicians, along with chapters on popular recreational activities and the health and mental health of Ukrainians in the U.S.
Three final chapters discuss how the political tides have affected support for the Ukrainian’s struggle.
